A tribute to Bob Peak, one of Hollywood’s greatest film poster artists.
Robert M. Peak was born in Denver, Colorado in 1927. He had always wanted to be an illustrator from a young age. Serving his country in the Korean war he moved to California where he attended the Art Center College of Design, he graduated in 1951.
He started working in advertising during the 1950’s, he also contributed artwork to various magazines.
In 1961 Bob Peak was hired by United Artists to create a poster for the musical West Side Story, this led to more poster work for films including Camelot, In Like Flint, My Fair Lady, Kaleidoscope, Modesty Blaise and Thoroughly Modern Millie.
Bob Peak created 45 covers for Time Magazine. He also contributed artwork for TV Guide and Sports Illustrated.
In 1984 he designed 30 stamps for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, the largest commission of an individual artist from the U.S. Postal Service.
Bob Peak’s poster for Star Trek the Motion Picture is one of his most famous works, he also created the posters to the first four Trek sequels.
The Society of Illustrators elected him to its Hall of Fame in 1977. and in 1992 the Hollywood Reporter presented him with the Key Art Lifetime Achievement Award for his 30 years of outstanding contribution to the film industry,
His paintings of Marion Brando, Mother Teresa and Anwar Sadat hang in the Smithsonian Institution.
Bob Peak died in August 1992, he was 64 years old.

One thing I've discovered about compiling hubs on modern artists, there is precious little bio on them. All the various articles I encounter are virtually the same, with the same bits of info.
Bob Peak is said to have created well over a hundred movie posters but I could only find about 30 titles listed. Why isn't there a complete filmography on the web?
I have enjoyed his work for many many years. It is very nice to see someone give the man some credit, which he richly deserves.

I must admit I have never heard of Bob Peak before this hub. But I must also admit I am very familiar with his work. This is an impressive collection of artwork on many classic films. I have always liked the Star Trek posters....but the ones I like the best are Apocalypse Now and Rollerball. Thanks for another interesting and educational hub.
Cheers Cogerson, thanks for popping in. Yeah the Rollerball poster is great, I would have loved to have that one on my wall as a kid. Enter the Dragon was pretty cool too, I had the Chinese poster pinned up way back in my 'kung fu' years. :)

I've seen a lot of the films on his resume. When I saw the Bond exhibit in Vancouver, Dad bought me th ebook "James Bond Movie Posters: The Official 007 Collection (don't know how to type a gun). I would love a collection of movie posters from musicals. I am also a fan of the Star Trek:TOS (classic tv) and have seen that cast's list of films.
